How to reach Pondicherry

Pondicherry is located in the southern-east part of India, next to the state of Tamil Nadu. Chennai is situated 162km from Pondicherry and Bangalore is about 320km from Pondicherry.


By Air:
The closest airport from Pondicherry is in Chennai (160km). The Chennai Airport is divided by the Domestic Terminal and the International Terminal.

The Domestic Terminal is connected to all major Indian cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kochi, Goa, Pune, etc.

Although Pondicherry has a railway station, availability of trains is limited to/from Villupuram and Chennai.

Villupuram:
Villupuram (40km) has a major railway station which is connected to/from the rest of Tamilnadu. Trains are available to/from cities like Pondicherry, Madurai, Trichy, Coimbatore, Rameshwaram and Trivandrum.

Chennai:
Chennai has two major railway stations; The Egmore Railway Station and the Chennai Central.

Egmore Railway Station connects passengers to/from places across and around Tamil Nadu. The Chennai Central connects passengers to/from all major cities in India.

From Chennai:
There are two roads to reach Pondicherry; NH 45 (National Highway) or ECR (East Coast Road)

ECR: East Coast Road is built along the coast of the Bay of Bengal connecting Chennai to Pondicherry via Mamallapuram. A trip along the East Coast Road gives rise to a spectacular scenic beauty with beaches and fishermen hamlets.

NH 45 (National Highway): NH 45 is an express highway which was also known as the GST Road. The advantage of taking this route is that the traffic is divided in two sections, one for small cars and one for big trucks. There will be a road diversion from NH-45 in Tindivanam to reach Pondicherry.

Tip: ECR is ideal for travel in day light. NH 45 is ideal for travelling without traffic congestions, recommended for travel during day and night.

From Bangalore:
Pondicherry is about 300km from Bangalore. Drive down Hosur Road till Krishnagiri, take a left from the main highway (road signs mark the route) and then enter the National Highway which leads to Pondicherry.




By Bus:
From Chennai:
If you’re travelling from Chennai to Pondicherry, there are private and state transportation buses which depart from Koyambedu Bus Terminus.

The state transportation operated buses are cheap (crowded) and available every 15 - 30 minutes from CMBT – Koyambedu Bus Terminus.

Semi-luxury private buses are available from Omni Bus Stand – Koyambedu Bus Terminus.


From Bangalore:
If you’re travelling from Bangalore to Pondicherry, there are private and state transportation buses.

K.S.R.T.C operates two semi-luxury volvo coaches daily from Bangalore to Pondicherry which departs from Kempegowda Bus Station.

Semi-luxury private bus operators are available in Madiwala and Kalasipalyam.
